Plan Your Outdoor Oasis
While it may be cold outside, now is the time to start planning your backyard makeover so that you can enjoy it as soon as the weather warms up. Whether you want to add a calming water feature, install a patio for entertaining, or refresh your landscaping, early planning can help ensure that you have an approved design, an accurate estimate, and, most importantly, a spot on your landscaper’s schedule! Here’s what to consider as you create the outdoor living space of your dreams.
Footprint
One of the first things you should consider is how much of your yard your outdoor addition will cover. Mark out the area clearly and envision your new patio, water feature, garden bed, etc., in the space. Reflect on this space for a few days, and make sure you are comfortable with the footprint. Try going bigger or smaller until you find the right fit.
Atmosphere
While you may have a general idea of what you want in your yard, consider other elements that could enhance your design. Would a small water feature make the space more calming? Would an outdoor kitchen make entertaining easier? Although these features can be added later, including them in the initial design helps to create a more cohesive look.
Greenery
Hardscapes like patios or fire pits are great additions but can sometimes feel stark. Plan to incorporate bushes, garden beds, or even climbing vines to preserve the outdoor feel. Landscaping will enhance the look of your space, but it can also provide privacy and help block out noise.
Lighting
Lighting is a must in outdoor spaces. Uplighting can spotlight trees or feature pieces in your yard; path lighting can help ensure your family's and guests' safety, and patio lighting helps set the mood once the sun goes down.
Drainage
Consider how changes to your yard will impact water runoff. Consult with your landscape designer about the best options to prevent water issues. Common options include French drains, dry creek beds, rain gardens, and extended downspouts. You’ll be thankful you included this important element in your plan.
Sun Cover
You may have designed the most beautiful outdoor space, but if it's in direct sunlight, you may not enjoy it as much as you thought. Consider adding a gazebo or pergola to your hardscape or planting fast-growing shade trees.
