Five Ways to Customize Artificial Turf
Artificial turf is a popular choice for homeowners looking for low-maintenance, durable grass that looks great all year long. Not all artificial turf is created the same, and homeowners can build their artificial lawns to their liking. If you are looking to install artificial turf on your property, consider the following customization options:
Color: Artificial turf is available in many colors. The most realistic grass coloring is usually achieved with an olive green, although lime green and forest green shades are also available. Lighter shades of green look better in sun-filled yards, while darker greens are often preferred in wooded areas with a lot of shade. Colors can also be combined to add more depth to your yard.
Pile Height: How you use your yard is a good determining factor for what size blade you should choose when installing artificial turf. Blade heights typically range from 1.125 to 2.5 inches. Shorter blades are best for yards that see a lot of foot traffic (like kids playing or dogs running). Longer blades are more appropriate when the grass is mainly for aesthetic purposes. If you install a putting green, the turf height should only be around half an inch.
Blade Weight: The weight of an artificial grass blade ranges from 30 to 90 ounces per square yard, and most artificial turf used in residential settings is between 50 and 80 ounces. The more foot traffic your yard receives, the higher the weight you should choose; the higher the weight, the more durable the blades will be.
Density: When you combine an artificial turf's height and weight, you determine its density. More dense installations of artificial turf are recommended for heavy-use areas. A short pile height and high weight make for a very dense lawn, while a high pile height and low weight will lead to a less dense lawn. For a freshly cut lawn look, choose a short pile height and low weight. If you prefer an average-length lawn, choose a high pile height and high weight.
Infill: Infill is the product placed between the blades of grass to keep them upright and provide padding for the turf. Infill can be made of silica sand, crumb rubber, and other materials, including eco-friendly options. Some types of infill are available with antimicrobial, anti-odor, and cooling options.
