How to Have a Better Relationship with Your Yard
While many homeowners love the idea of a beautiful, unique yard, they often have no clue how to bring it about. Fortunately, creating the perfect backyard oasis is not as hard as you may think. With time, you can stop hating your yard and start to really enjoy it. Here are some simple landscaping tips to get you started!
Figure out what you want. Having a vague idea in your head of what you want the finished product to look like isn’t a very good game plan. Scouring the internet and pouring over home and garden magazines will give you a glimpse of the most beautiful landscapes in the country – and help you get a concrete idea of what you want your yard to look like in the end.
Be meticulous with your planning. The best designs start with correct planning, and landscape design is no different. When it comes to landscaping projects, you will want to start by sketching the dimensions of your yard to scale on graph paper. You should include on your diagram the established plants that you plan on keeping, as well as water features, outbuildings and walkways.
Carefully consider changes. If you have just moved into a new home with an established garden and flowerbeds, hold off on making any immediate changes. There’s no telling what treasures are lying dormant under the ground, waiting for their time to emerge. So instead of immediately ripping things out and starting over, be patient and wait a full season to familiarize yourself with the current landscaping.
Keep your grass at the correct height. It’s important for the health of your lawn to know at what height it will perform best. Cool-season grasses do best when they’re cut higher, while warm-season grasses can be cut lower. Maintaining the correct mowing height for your type of grass will help make your lawn more drought-resistant and discourage weeds and undesirable grasses.
